2012 Olympics: BBC Will Broadcast 'Every Hour of Every Event,' Says Head of Sport
EDINBURGH -- The BBC will provide comprehensive coverage of the London 2012 Olympic Games next year for the first time in its history, using internet channels to provide total coverage of all 24 competition events in addition to carrying major sport coverage and highlights on its main channels.our editor recommendsU.S. Won't Bid on 2020 Summer OlympicsBBC to Add $7.4 Million to Budget for Olympic CoverageLondon Riots: Worst Civil Unrest in Memory as City Gears Up for 2012 OlympicsLondon Olympics To Get 3D Treatment As recently as the Beijing Games, the BBC had only been able to provide coverage of around 75 percent of the events via its interactive operations. This time pubcaster is fashioning its content so that it can be adapted for TV viewers as well as desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone users. Speaking at a panel in Edinburgh, BBC director of sport Roger Mosey said the BBC was preparing to offer viewers coverage of "every hour of every event from the beginning of the event to the end." Mosey said the BBC was investigating the possibility of 3D broadcasting but admitted that there were capacity issues. There would be only a "limited" role for the coverage as it would need to transmit on of the BBC's two dedicated HDTV channels and yet broadcast to only a handful of homes. However the pubcaster will trial a new Super Hi Definition broadcasting approach in partnership with NHK Japan. Super Hi Def television sets are not expected to be commercially available for over a decade, but the BBC and NHK are working on installing three dedicated high-cost 50-foot screens in London, Bradford and Glasgow for the Olympics. The venues will allow a handful of the audience at least to sample the technology, which has 16 times the clarity of Hi Def. Mosey said the BBC hasn't yet disclosed how much money it is investing on its coverage of the 17-event in July, but said it was on a "huge scale." It will publish the figure next year. Its investment in people is expected to be significantly ahead of the 439 staff it sent to cover Beijing -- for the same event NBC send more than 2,800 -- and will involve local and regional reporters covering the passage of the Olympic torch, news reporters on the coverage of the Games as a whole and the bulk of the resources of its sporting staff. "Almost everyone at the BBC in one way or another will be involved with the Olympics," he said. Related Topics International BBC

Eric Stonestreet to Play Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle in New HBO Movie
Pioneering silent film comedian Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle — whose career was ruined following charges that he raped and murdered actress Virginia Rappe in 1921 (he was acquitted) — is getting a proper biopic treatment in the HBO movie The Day the Laughter Stopped, with Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet set to star. The tragic story will be spun by John Adams scribe Kirk Ellis, with Barry Levinson attached as director. Seems like a perfect storm of talents; I just wish HBO titled it something a little more Arbucklian, like Fatty’s Big Murder or Mabel’s Confounding Demise. [Vulture]

Michael Fassbender offered the lead in dark thriller Prisoners
The intense demand for Michael Fassbender is showing no sign of slowing down, with The Playlist confirming that the actor has been offered the lead role in Prisoners. The movie, which is based on a 2009 Black List script by Aaron Guzikowski, has previously had the likes of Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, Hugh Jackman and Leonardo DiCaprio interested at various points.Bryan Singer and Antoine Fuqua have hovered over the director's chair, but the most recently attached name was Denis Villeneuve (Incendies), who was hired to direct Prisoners earlier this year.It certainly has an attention-grabbing premise: frustrated by the pace of the police investigation, religious deer hunter Keller Dove (the part offered to Fassbender) kidnaps and tortures the man he believes abducted his daughter and her friend. While Fassbender could own that role, it's not yet clear if he'll sign on, particularly when you consider how rammed his schedule is looking. He has recently completed work on some of the most anticipated movies in production, including Ridley Scott's Prometheus, David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method, and Steve McQueen's Shame.Already on the cards for Fassbender's future is Brendan Gleeson's directorial debut, At Swim-Two-Birds, and a Jim Jarmusch vampire flick, and he had to walk away from Danny Boyle's Trance recently (to be replaced by James McAvoy). He probably should try to schedule in a day off at some point though...
